New scientific testing methods that do not involve animal testing can ensure compliance with the strict EU-wide regulations on the safety assessment of cosmetic products. The new training module on New Approach Methods (NAMs) expands the high-quality DGK/IKW continuing education programme for safety assessors with a highly topical module that conveys modern approaches in a clear and practical manner.
For more than 25 years, the German Society for Scientific and Applied Cosmetics (DGK) and the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW) have been offering a continuing education programme for safety assessors at the highest level. In practical training seminars and intensive web-based courses, the programme imparts interdisciplinary knowledge on scientific topics and relevant legislation that is essential for safety assessors beyond their formal qualifications.
DGK and IKW are therefore delighted to announce the new 8th module on NAMs, which is now available on Cosmetic Safety Assessment Using New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) - Fortbildungen für Sicherheitsbewerter.
The course provides safety assessors with the most up to date and comprehensive knowledge on cosmetic ingredient and product assessment using NAMs available to date. It features seven chapters and 13 hours of instruction covering the key topics including local toxicity endpoints, genotoxicity, in-silico and kinetic modeling, systemic risk assessment, and more.
The presentations discuss the relevant assays and tools including the underlying science, their advantages and limitations, data interpretation, and application, with case studies to enhance comprehension. Speakers for each topic are recognized practitioners and leaders in the NAMs field, representing the Institute for In Vitro Sciences, EsqLabs, the International Collaboration on Cosmetic Safety (ICCS), Cosmetics Europe, and more.
Erin Hill, President & CEO, International Collaboration on Cosmetic Safety (ICCS): "The new module on NAMs marks an important step in advancing modern, science-based approaches to cosmetic safety assessment. ICCS is proud to have contributed as part of its ongoing mission to support collaboration, education, and the application of New Approach Methodologies. The course provides safety assessors with practical insight into applying NAMs within today’s evolving regulatory and scientific landscape."
“We were very pleased to work with DGK and IKW on this course,” said Kristie Sullivan, MPH, Vice President for Education and Outreach at the Institute for In Vitro Sciences. “NAMs are now an integral part of toxicology, and this course will help safety assessors apply data from them for robust and modern safety assessments.“
Birgit Huber, Deputy Managing Director and Head of the Beauty Care Competence Partner at IKW: "Innovative animal-free testing methods for assessing the safety of substances are setting the trend for the cosmetics industry. With the new NAMs course module, we are meeting the high standards we have set for the training program for safety assessors for more than 25 years: to always teach the latest scientific methods and findings on the safety of cosmetics.
