Information for Professionals

Finally well styled again!

The results of a current IKW survey show which service Germans would like to use first after the hairdressers reopened.

When the hairdressers are allowed to open again in Germany on May 4th, a dry spell ends for many. After the salons had been closed for weeks, short haircuts had grown out, hairline had turned gray and hairstyles were often carelessly styled. Looking good is somehow different. In a survey by the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW), 60 percent of men and 64 percent of women state that they want to have their hair cut first. The topic of color in the hair is also at the top of the wish list for women. 55 percent of the female adult population would like to have the hair color completely refreshed, recolour the hairline or have the hair loosened up with highlights. The idea that men don't dye their hair is an outdated cliché: Almost a quarter of the strong sex thinks that their hair color would also be more fresher.

There is now the all-clear for everyone who has carried out self-tests on their hair in the hairdressing-free period – the professionals are ready to repair unsuccessful attempts with craft scissors and hair clippers. Men in particular seem to have been creative in this over the past few weeks. Almost 20 percent of them state that touching up the unwanted haircuts on their first visit is very important to them. 13 percent of women also want the support of their favorite hairdresser for their own experiments.

In order to reduce the risk of infection with Sars-CoV-2 in the hairdressing business as much as possible, the salons must take into account a number of occupational safety measures when reopening. Before the reopening, the competent German employer's liability insurance association (Berufsgenossenschaft für Gesundheitsdienst und Wohlfahrtspflege – BGW) developed an industry standard for hairdressing companies so that customers and employees in the salon are well protected. Birgit Huber, head of the competence partner for beauty care within IKW: "We are pleased that the hairdressers can open again. The last few weeks have been very exhausting for the salons and their employees as well as for the manufacturers of professional hair care products. But they all used the time well to prepare themselves well for the new requirements. In this way, hairdressers can offer their customers a large part of the services they are used to in a safe environment."

As part of a representative survey across Germany, over 1,000 people between the ages of 14 and 69 were interviewed in the online panel. The quantitative survey was carried out by Lönneker & Imdahl rheingold salon on behalf of IKW.
